Doug Freeman

Doug Freeman is a fish farmer with particular experiences with Murray Cod. Doug gained a degree in Applied Science from the University of Adelaide Salisbury Campus

In 1986 Doug started extensively farming Golden Perch and Murray Cod in conjunction with the stock exchange listed public company, Tandou Ltd..

Water was sourced from Darling River over flows just below the Mennindee Lakes system in Central NSW. Tandou Ltd used the  large lakes for water storage that was used for irrigation purposes.

In the business partnership, Doug extensively farmed Lake Nettelgoe one of the storage lakes.

Over a period of three years Doug released over 500,000 golden perch for extensive culture.

In 1990 Doug was employed by Tandou Ltd as Aquaculture Manager to further develop harvesting and on growing techniques. This included developing grow out into other water storage facilities and large scale harvesting using a sean net (1,200 mts long), and  processing of fish.

The Victorian Government through Victorian Fisheries indicated their desire in developing a 500 ton Murray cod industry in Victoria. A private equity company Hodig Pty Ltd employed Doug to further research Murray Cod for commercial value adding to irrigation water.

Hodig Pty Ltd worked on fingerling survival rates on different artificial diets and  food conservation trials with KINTA foods. The project ran a four year period. The trials were based indoors and also developed and trialed different early small RAS systems designs.

Gaining hands on experiences working in hatcheries and on growing business for over 20 yrs in fresh water fish species, Doug has a practical approach to farm culture of golden perch and silver perch and Murray cod.

Doug also took a years working holiday in Tasmania working with Atlantic salmon.

Doug also has in partnership a small hatchery nursery grow out farm on the Murray River near Colignan. However due to current restrictions placed on by water availability the farm is currently not being utilised.

Doug is currently employed by Thurla Farms as fish manger. Doug is developing protocols and business approaches to a large scale commercial operation for Murray Cod grow out in cages. This project is based in the Mildura area.
